About Us

Sweet Cicely Studio is the project of artists Hannah Gelderman and Madeleine Salomons. Long-time family friends, they both grew up and live on Treaty Six Territory in Edmonton, AB. After separately pursuing arts degrees, they began more serious collaborations and, in 2025, created Sweet Cicely Studio. Inspired by the land and watersheds in the aspen parkland where they live, they hand-paint bold and playful designs onto arches, murals and more.

The name Sweet Cicely Studio comes from a lovely anise-scented flowering plant, Long-Styled Sweet Cicely (Osmorhiza longistylis) that grows wild in Hannah’s backyard and in the North Saskatchewan river valley.

Arch Origins

Hannah’s sister and Madeleine’s dear friend Gabrielle was getting married to the love of her life, April, in June 2025. The brides had many ideas for their wedding, one of which was to have a painted arch that told their love story and that guests could take photos in front of at the wedding.

Gabrielle and April hinted to their most creative sidekicks that they would love this sort of arch. Luckily, Hannah and Madeleine are energized by a creative challenge, and agreed to bring it to life. They recruited their dads to build the arch, and Madeleine and Hannah designed and painted it. This was how the first arch was made.

As Hannah and Madeleine worked on the arch for Gabrielle and April’s wedding, they realized what unique and meaningful addition this arch would be to the wedding, and thought there might be others out there who could want similar hand-painted decor at their events.
